Giant Action Needed for Harmless Disposal of Sludge

The central ecological and environmental protection inspector has completed the inspection and reported a new batch of prominent pollution issues. Among the typical cases reported in this round, three out of five pollution situations fall under the category of sewage treatment. What is the problem of water pollution, which accounts for most of it?

Firstly, the illegal reception and disposal of sludge results in large-scale and severe soil pollution;
Secondly, inadequate sewage treatment and collection, frequent direct discharge and overflow of domestic sewage, affecting the water environment;
Thirdly, the construction of supporting facilities for sewage treatment lags behind, and long-term direct discharge of domestic sewage pollutes the environment.

As a typical example of notification, sludge issues can be considered in the fields of water treatment and solid waste treatment, and also greatly endanger soil environmental health. In this announcement, the first thing that catches our attention is the typical case of illegal receipt and disposal of sludge. It can be seen that environmental inspectors also attach great importance to the issue of sludge treatment and disposal. The harmless disposal of sludge requires not just verbal effort, but also a giant underfoot.

About a year ago, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the "14th Five Year Plan for Urban Sewage Treatment and Resource Utilization Development", which mentioned that by 2025, the harmless disposal rate of urban sludge should reach 90% or above, and by 2035, it is also required to fully achieve harmless disposal of sludge.

In this context, it should be noted that the environmental pollution problem caused by the disorderly reception and disposal of sludge in China is becoming increasingly prominent, and the level of harmless sludge treatment urgently needs to be improved. Furthermore, it is necessary to further realize the resource utilization and disposal of sludge.

In fact, from the perspective of capital, sludge is also a tool for "making money" and should not be regarded as a "byproduct" of zero value. As long as we break through the bottleneck of technology, we will see the "golden mountains and silver mountains". "Clear waters and green mountains" is true, but it gives the ultimate idea of future development.

Moreover, China's sludge treatment and disposal technology has made significant progress at present. With the premise of predecessors paving the way, the problem-solving approach is naturally on the path of simplification. From the current development perspective, sludge disposal schemes have various technological means such as drying and composting, and sludge drying is becoming the mainstream of sludge treatment and disposal due to its advantages in reduction and resource utilization. In the important branch of sludge drying, there is still significant room for expansion.

Who can guarantee when the next new drying method will emerge, with various drying methods such as natural drying, thermal drying, high-temperature drying, low-temperature drying, etc? And these existing drying methods are not without defects, as natural drying requires a large land area and can produce odor pollution; Although low-temperature drying can more effectively overcome many bottlenecks in sludge treatment, it also causes many users to hesitate in terms of price setting and other aspects

There are many directions for technological breakthroughs, so it seems that the ways for sludge to "turn waste into treasure" will also be enriched. Disposing of sludge at will or causing unnecessary environmental pollution is clearly not worth the loss.
