Centrifugal Dewatering for Slurry and Sludge
A centrifugal dewaterer concentrates suspended solids by separating part of the liquid from a suitable slurry. This page describes a horizontal solid-bowl decanter: a rotating bowl provides centrifugal sedimentation, and an internal scroll transports the separated solids to discharge.
Mechanical dewatering produces a wetter or drier solids stream depending on the material and operating duty. It does not remove all moisture or replace thermal drying when a dry powder is required.
How the Dewatering Process Works
- Prepared slurry enters the rotating bowl through the feed system.
- Solids denser than the liquid settle toward the bowl wall under centrifugal force.
- The scroll rotates at a differential speed and conveys settled solids toward the discharge zone.
- The separated liquid leaves through its own outlet for return, treatment or another agreed process step.
This sedimentation principle differs from a low-speed screw press and from a basket machine used to spin discrete articles. Select the machine type according to the physical form of the feed.
Assess the Feed Before Selecting a Model
Potential duties include sludge and process slurries whose solids can be separated by density. Suitability depends on solids concentration, particle size, density difference, viscosity and the tendency to form compressible or sticky deposits. Abrasive or corrosive feeds require an appropriate materials and wear assessment.
For a defined wastewater sludge duty, see the sludge dewatering decanter centrifuge. For broader process selection, review the solid-liquid separation centrifuge.
Balance Cake Solids, Capture and Throughput
Evaluate dewatering as a balance between cake consistency, solids retained in the cake, liquid quality and feed capacity. A change that improves one measure may affect another. Bowl speed, differential speed, feed rate and liquid level must be selected within the manufacturer's approved limits.
Some sludges benefit from conditioning. Determine whether polymer is needed through testing rather than assuming that every material needs the same chemical or dose. Where required, consider the interfaces with an automatic flocculant dosing system.
Information Needed for Equipment Selection
- Material source, representative sample and normal or peak flow.
- Feed dry-solids concentration, particle characteristics and density.
- Temperature, pH, viscosity and abrasive or corrosive constituents.
- Required cake consistency and acceptable suspended solids in the liquid.
- Operating hours, utilities, installation space and discharge handling.
No model-specific capacity, speed or motor rating is stated on this page. Request a current datasheet and a duty-specific proposal. Material selection, controls, conditioning equipment and installation scope should be confirmed in that proposal.
Maintenance and Operating Planning
Plan access for inspection, wear checks and maintenance. Follow the supplied manual for start-up, shutdown, cleaning and isolation. Investigate abnormal vibration or temperature through the approved machine procedure; do not use generic advice to set speed limits or bypass protective controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
What cake dryness can a centrifugal dewaterer achieve?
There is no single value for all feeds. Particle properties, sludge composition, conditioning and machine settings influence the result. Agree a target using representative tests and defined feed conditions.
Is the separated liquid ready for discharge?
Not automatically. Assess the liquid against the requirements of the receiving process or treatment system. Mechanical separation does not remove every dissolved constituent.
Does a solid bowl eliminate every blockage?
No. It avoids reliance on a filter screen for sedimentation, but unsuitable feed, deposits or overloaded solids handling can still disrupt operation.
Is thickening the same as dewatering?
Thickening raises the concentration of a slurry, while dewatering usually targets a more concentrated solids discharge. Define the required outlet consistency before selecting the equipment.
Request a Dewatering Assessment
Send SENZ your feed analysis, flow range and outlet targets to assess the separation duty and identify the information needed for a model recommendation.
